The Victorian Era lasted from 1832 to 1900. During this Era, some changes occurred which greatly influenced the works
of all writers, include Wilkie Collins. Some of these changes included the emergence of serialized novels, magazines,
political and detective novels, elegies, and dramas.
Because of these things, literature could be more widely produced. Paper was beginning to be cheaper and production was
easier to achieve. Writers could not only get their work more readily available to the public but the areas in which they
could write were beginning to be more broad.
The content areas included things like: Conflict between the laborers and the poor, country life versus city life, lack
of sexual discretion, romantic triangles, and heroines in physical danger.
